It was encouraging to learn from the recent budget announcement that further investment will be made in technical skills and education. With the skills gap ever increasing, you hope this investment will go some way in ensuring that there will be a bigger pool of technical students wanting to make manufacturing or engineering their career choice.

Carolyn Fairbairn, CBI director general, said: “This is a breakthrough budget for skills”.

“There has never been a more important time for the UK to sit at the global top table of technical education for young people,” she said.

This announcement, along with the investment in apprenticeships, should enable UK manufacturers to start seeing a turnaround in the skills available in the future and sets a clear direction for the post-Brexit world.
